• Police to get hi-tech squad cars

THE Lagos State House of Assembly has charged newly appointed executive secretaries in the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Governments Council Development Areas in the State to ensure continuity and provision of basic amenities in their domain.

  The House, at a meeting held with the council helmsmen, reminded them of their duties, which is basically to ensure that dividends of democracy are well enjoyed at grassroots, pending the time fresh elections would be held into the council offices.

  Chairman, House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lanre Oshun, noted that critical areas like healthcare, rehabilitations of roads and schools and other infrastructural developments should be the priority of the secretaries, especially as the general election approaches.

   In his words: “The tradition of radical and intensive provision of infrastructure which have been the cardinal programme of the All Progressive Congress (APC), should be championed by the Executive Secretaries in their councils,” Oshun said.

    According to the Lawmaker, the Assembly is poised to ensure they succeed within their tenure, while urging them to mobilize and sensitize their constituents on the need to actively participate in the forthcoming election.

   He appealed for all necessary sacrifices to deliver their different Local Government to the All Progressive Congress (APC), both at the State and Federal level. “I appeal to you all to reach out to your people and ensure that they come out en masse to vote for change”. 

  The need for continuity in governance is important, urging them not to allow power elude the APC in their councils. 

  “This can be achieved when efficient service delivery is maintained through the provision of basic amenities to the people to win their confidence,” he said.

   A member of the committee, Suuru Avoseh commended the party leadership for their thoroughness in choosing the right people that can steer the ship of the various council to greatness and ensure continuity on various developmental projects in the council.

   Responding on behalf of the other secretaries, the executive secretary for Shomolu Local Government, Abiodun Orekoya, restated the commitment of his colleagues to the ideas of the All Progressive Congress to impact on the lives of Lagosians.

  He said the tradition of good governance cannot be compromised and would be upheld across the council in the State.

   It would be recalled that the executive secretaries were appointed at the expiration of the term of the chairmen. Council managers before the executive secretaries held brief for the Local Government. The executive secretaries are expected to oversee the affairs of the local council until election is held.

   Meanwhile, the state government, on Monday, said it would soon deploy squad cars for the use of police personnel across the various police formations in the state. Governor Babatunde Fashola made the disclosure while handing over an ICT Resource Centre at Area H Police Command in Ogudu area.

   Fashola said the squad cars were already being purpose-built in Japan and when deployed, they would assist police personnel to respond to crime more efficiently.

   According to him, we are at the point where we are planning squad cars for each police station so that police officers can go in pairs with on-board computers and re-inforced shock absorbers. The cars are already being built in Japan.
