Nigeria weeks away from being polio-free, says Rotary DG

The District 9110 Governor (DG) of Rotary International, Dr. Jide Akerele, has said Nigeria is a month away from being declared polio-free. Akerele, who was hosted by the Rotary Club of Falomo, noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) was concluding the paper works prelude to the declaration of the country as a polio-free nation.

According to him, “We have not had a case of polio for the last three years. The last case was August 22, 2016. On August 22, 2019, if we don’t record any case of polio by then, WHO would declare Nigeria polio-free. We are expecting the much-awaited declaration and certificate in October.”

At the breakfast meeting, the club’s president, Mrs. Julie Nkanga, disclosed that the club was poised at ensuring that rural dwellers get quality healthcare. The District Governor, who was impressed by the club’s performance, urged members to up their ante in humanitarian activities.

Nkanga said: “We are glad to host the district governor. He is here to commission some of our projects like donation of generating set and hospital equipment to the Langbasa community health centre. When we went there for needs assessment some weeks ago, we discovered that patients go through a lot when there is power outage. We are happy to impact lives.”

Supervisor of Health in the Local Government Area, Oshodi Wakilu, appreciated Rotary for their community-oriented programmes. “This is a big surprise to us and we are really thankful to Rotary for this gesture aimed at assisting government in reducing the sufferings of the people.”The club in the past had embarked on a massive reading campaign aimed at promoting the efficiency of students in the use of English language.
