As part of their activities to reduce crime in the society and empower inmates, a non-governmental organisation, Anchor Heritage, in conjunction with the Nigerian Prisons Service has trained 50 inmates in paint production and painting, which will help them with skills to be self-reliant at the end of their jail terms.

Speaking at the training held at the Kirikiri Medium Prison, Apapa, Lagos State, founder of Anchor Heritage, Bidemi Oladipupo, said their aim is to empower prisoners to be useful to themselves and the society after their rehabilitation.

To this end, the organisation is working towards establishing a rehabilitation academy for released prisoners.

Oladipupo noted that the organization provides free legal assistance and representation in court to those who cannot afford it, in partnership with various individuals, religious bodies and corporate organisations.

Deputy Comptroller of the Kirikiri Medium Prison, Oluwaniyi Emmanuel, applauded the initiative noting that once the prisoners regain their freedom, they would be better equipped to produce paint and handle painting jobs in order to earn a living.

“This will keep them engaged and in turn reduce unemployment in the country,” he said.

The entire perimeter wall of the prison has been beautifully done and transformed by the inmates. Oladipupo expressed his gratitude to their corporate partners for their support.

Some of the beneficiaries who preferred to remain anonymous expressed their happiness with the programme and commended the organisation for coming to their aid by empowering them in preparation for their return to society.
