All seems to be set for negotiations to begin on the new minimum wage as the technical committee on the matter has concluded its assignment.

The technical committee was inaugurated on May 17, 2016 to review the request by workers for an increment in the national minimum wage as well as execution of palliative measures to cushion the effect of the increase in pump price of fuel.

Speaking during the presentation of the report in Abuja yesterday, Chairman of the committee and Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the committee had made far-reaching recommendations, which it hopes would be adopted by the main committee headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal and then transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari, who will then inaugurate a negotiating committee.

The minister disclosed that the technical committee had recommended the constitution of a 28-member panel to form the minimum wage negotiation committee.

He said that the 29 members committee would consist of eight members from Federal Government, eight from the organised labour, eight members from organised private sector and three members from Nigerian Governors’ Forum.

The committee report urged the Federal Government to urgently constitute the negotiation committee to achieve its purpose on time.

Meanwhile, the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, urged state governors to actively participate when negotiations commence and ensure that agreements reached are implemented.

Also, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Kaigama Bobboi, urged the Federal Government to look into the issue of unpaid workers’ salaries.
