The Osun State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday announced that 16.8 hectares of Indian hemp (Cannabis Sativa) farm located in Ikoyi community in the state had been destroyed.

The Commandant, Mr. Samuel Egbeola, made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo on the achievements of the agency in Osun. He said the farm was destroyed on September 26. The commandant said the farm was discovered and destroyed by the NDLEA, following a tip-off by an intelligence source.

He added that during the operation, 25 kilogrammes of already harvested hemp were found on the farm. The NDLEA chief said, however, that no arrest was made during the operation because nobody was found on the farm. He called on members of the public to cooperate with the agency by giving useful information that would lead to the arrest of anyone involved in India hemp plantations.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State police command has recovered 38 bags of Indian hemp worth over N20 million during a raid on suspected hideouts in Itire, Mushin. The recovery was made by operatives from the Area D Police command, Mushin led by the Area Commander, Akinbayo Olasoji.

Mobile squadrons attached to the command also provided a cover for the operatives. According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Imohimi, 52 suspects were arrested during the raid of the drug haven in Mushin, which was triggered by reports on a clash over a lady in the area where over 150 cars were vandalized.

“In line with my avowed policing plan, which is based on community policing, residents of the area were invited and based on the partnership we had built overtime, they confirmed the incident and gave information on their hideouts. Based on the information gathered that the hoodlums had been terrorizing the neighborhood, I ordered an overnight raid during which 44 male and eight female suspects were arrested with 38 bags of Indian hemp.

“They were also caught with other hard drugs, which are very expensive and cannot be less than N20 million. The drugs are usually packaged and called Bible so whenever members of the public see anything like this, they should know it is hard drugs and not a Bible. Members of the public should be vigilant so that these drugs are not sold to your children,” he said.
