NBA insists Okorocha owes judges, Imo governor reacts

Rochas Okorocha

The Imo State government and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Owerri branch, have continued to trade blames over alleged non-payment of 16 months’ allowance to judges. The immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, while addressing journalists recently, had accused Governor Rochas Okorocha of not paying judges.

In a statement at the weekend, the NBA chairman, Owerri branch, Lawrence Nwakaeti, said the state government owed allowances and that the association had already sued on the matter.

But the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said: “We have read the reaction of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Owerri branch, on the issue of judges’ salary in Imo.

“The former state governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim had said, while unveiling his ambition to run for the 2019 governorship, that the state government is owing judges 16 months’ salary. He has continued to emphasise this, until we decided to respond.

“In our response, we stated clearly that judges’ salary is paid by the National Judicial Council (NJC) and not the state government. And we contended that either the former governor had forgotten this fact or deliberately decided to be austere with the truth.”
