Navy foils attack on Chinese vessel, rescues 18

The Nigerian Navy yesterday said it had rescued 18 crewmembers on board a Chinese vessel, MV HAILUFANG II, from pirates.

The Nigerian Navy yesterday said it had rescued 18 crewmembers on board a Chinese vessel, MV HAILUFANG II, from pirates.

The disclosure was made by the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Ibrahim Shettima.

He said the event took place on May 15, 2020, adding that the crew, comprising Chinese, Ghanaians and Ivoiriens, were attacked by pirates off the coast of Cote d’Ivoire.

“I am here to make a brief on the rescue efforts of the Nigerian Navy in a recent pirate attack within the Gulf of Guinea (GoG). On May 15, a Chinese vessel, MV HAILUFANG II, was attacked by pirates off the coast of Cote d’Ivoire.

“The pirates took control of the vessel and directed the vessel towards Nigerian waters. The vessel had 18 crewmembers, comprising Chinese, Ghanaians and Ivoiriens,” the commander stated.
