Nations seek end to oil theft, sea piracy
Nigeria and other member-countries of the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) have renewed calls for concerted efforts to tackle the enormous challenges facing the Gulf of Guinea such as oil theft, sea piracy, human trafficking, drug trafficking, armed robbery and other illicit activities in the region.
This came yesterday as Nigeria emerged the Chairman of the GGC with a call by President Muhammadu Buhari on members to urgently address the socio-economic and security challenges facing the commission.
Buhari, represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who spoke shortly after Nigeria’s confirmation at the 4th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) held in Abuja, said that members could achieve this by coming up with measures to check violation of domestic and international treaties in the Gulf of Guinea.
He listed other challenges facing the commission to include a rise in maritime insurance premiums for vessels coming into the Gulf of Guinea, increased threats and reduced commercial traffic to the region and unregulated and unreported fishing along the Gulf of Guinea.
