NAPTIP, others move to combat human trafficking in Edo

The Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has stressed the need to institutionalise early warning mechanism to prevent human trafficking at the community and grassroots level in Edo State.

Benin Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Nduka Nwanwenne, stated this at a multi-stakeholders validation and strategy meeting towards community action to prevent Human Trafficking and Unsafe Migration with support from WomenAid Collective (WACOL) in collaboration with the Switzerland Government.

He said human trafficking was degrading and dehumanising, as well as a violation of rights of the victims.

Executive Director, WomenAid Collective (WACOL) a non-governmental organisation, Professor Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, said the group in collaboration with Switzerland Government was committed to ensuring safe options and safety measures to combat human trafficking and unsafe migration.

Chairpman, Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking and Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Professor Yinka Omorogbe, said Edo has been bleeding from the loss of thousands of young men and women due to human trafficking and irregular migration.

Omorogbe added that the state government has been aggressively tackling human trafficking and irregular migration through various developmental initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of the menace.

The commissioner also expressed concerns over the health risks involved in human trafficking, saying it could result to loss of lives.
