A member of the MTN Football Scholar team, Isaac Sampson, says his target is to play for the Super Eagles in the nearest future.

The 19-year-old Sampson, who has been in the United States for four years, schooling and playing football, told The Guardian at the UNILAG Sports Complex that it would be a dream come true for him to feature for the senior national team.

The MTN Football Scholar team defeated the University of Lagos football team 3-1 on Tuesday to end the Season 5 of the project on a high.

Sampson, who is currently in the American International College studying Physiology, was full of gratitude to MTN for the opportunity given to him and some other young Nigerians to school and play football. “Studying in the United States and at the same time playing football is a wonderful experience for me. Football is my passion and I hope to represent Nigeria one day.”

The match, played at the UNILAG Sports Complex was the final of a four-legged series of the Season 5 of the MTN Football Scholar initiative.

The event kicked off last week at the University of Abuja. The scholars then went on to play against Federal University Akure, University of Nigeria (Enugu Campus), who they also defeated 3-1, before ending it with a win over UNILAG team. The matches are part of efforts aimed at celebrating the milestones of the initiative since its inception.

The father of one of the beneficiaries, Michael Oyeniyi, who also spoke with The Guardian at the occasion, said: “Initially, it was very tough for my son, Adebare, and I almost withdrew him. They were over 4,000 and I didn’t believe he could make it, but today, the entire family is very happy.”

Three ex-international players, Joe Erico, Henry Nwosu and Tajudeen Disu, who are ambassadors of the MTN Football Scholar, have urged the students to make good use of the opportunity.
