Motorists decry worsening state of Asaba – Kwale -Ughelli Road

Motorists plying the Asaba/Kwale/Ughelli Road have decried the deplorable state of the road, which was contracted for rehabilitation to the tune of N4billion by the state government years back.

“We cannot drive through this road after Ozoro to Ughelli. It is a terrible,” said commercial driver, Kennedy Oborah.
Another bus driver, Friday Chikerem, a bus driver who plies the road often, blamed the state government for the neglect.

He pleaded with the government to rehabilitate the road as soon as possible.

According to official statement, the contracting firm has allegedly collected N4billion and disappeared without delivering the project.

But the State Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye told The Guardian that the contract has been reviewed to ensure motorists can ply the road even though the road is a Federal Government’s responsibility.

He assured the people of the state that the defaulting contractor would soon be brought to book.
Meanwhile, the perennial flooding in Obiaruku modern market may soon come to an end as the engineer responsible for the project has commenced works.

A team of engineers, led by Tony Okwe has began to understudy the erosion problem in the market.
The Executive Director, DESOPADEC, Mr. Ochor Ochor, said in a statement that the team of experts would soon carry out a comprehensive study of the existing drainage network.

Flooding in the market area has caused traders to lose millions worth of goods.
