Maritime workers suspend strike, as NPA assures of industrial harmony in ports

The three-day old strike action embarked upon by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has been suspended. President General of the union, Adewale Adeyanju, who confirmed the development, yesterday, said the action was suspended after an intervention of the permanent secretaries, Ministries of Transportation; Labour and Employment; some notable stakeholders, especially the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA); Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman; Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Peterside Dakuku; Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers Council, Hassan Bello and Chairman, Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) Princess Vicky Haastrup; among others. 
 
He said: “We have decided to suspend the strike action, pending the outcome of the meeting scheduled to take place next week between with managements of NPA, NIMASA, NSC, NNPC and the IOCS.”

General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, NPA, Jatto Adams, also confirmed the development, adding that normal port activities have been restored, assuring of industrial peace and harmony.
 
The workers embarked on the strike against the management of the International Oil Companies (IOCs), who have been owing the dockworkers salaries/wages for the past one year.
