Many VCs under EFCC’s probe, says NUC

The Executive Secretary of NUC Prof. Abubakar Rasheed disclosed this in Abuja, at a workshop on economic recovery growth by bursars of federal universities.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) yesterday announced that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently investigating some vice chancellors of federal universities over alleged financial misdeeds.

The Executive Secretary of NUC Prof. Abubakar Rasheed disclosed this in Abuja, at a workshop on economic recovery growth by bursars of federal universities.
Rasheed said the vice chancellors and bursars were accused of corruption, while some were already being prosecuted.

According to him, some of them had fraudulently allocated over N5 million yearly to themselves as furniture allowance.He urged the federal universities to adhere to presidential orders and ensure that extant federal circulars were applied.

Rasheed further tasked the universities on the Federal Government’s New Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (NERGP).He said: “This NUC-Federal Universities’ meeting is coming at a time when the government is facing serious issues concerning revenue generation and management.”

The secretary called for a stronger collaboration between the NUC and the bursars in implementing government’s accounting policies, budget preparation and collation.

Rasheed also disclosed that the NUC has so far received 240 applications from individuals and organisations to establish private universities.The Chairman, Association of Federal Universities’ Bursars, Mr. Yahaya Al-Hassan supported the need for a stronger collaboration between both organisations.
