• NANS protests in Ibadan over industrial impasse
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has presented N266.6 billion to the Oyo State House of Assembly for the 2021 fiscal year, with education receiving the lion’s share of the total budget estimate.
Makinde, while presenting the budget, tagged: “Budget of Continued Consolidation,” said that N56 billion, representing 21 per cent, was allocated to education while N46 billion (17.2 per cent) was proposed for infrastructural development.
He said that the proposed budget was prepared with 25.16 per cent increment over the N177 billion 2020 revised budget, adding that the allocation to the education sector is also well above the recommendation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, in his comment, promised that the lawmakers would thoroughly scrutinise the bill and give it accelerated passage.
He assured the people of the state that the Ninth Assembly would work with the executive and other stakeholders to ensure at least 70 per cent budget performance for 2021.
In another development, Makinde has said that the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, would soon begin a multi-campus mode of operation after the takeover of the institution.
He said that the effort would ensure improved service delivery in terms of teaching, learning, research, as well as exploring the economic potentials of the institution in the interest of the people of the state.
The governor stated this, yesterday, while addressing students of the university who paid a ‘thank-you visit to the Governor’s Office, Agodi, Secretariat, Ibadan.
The students, who were in their hundreds, led by Oyo State National Association of Nigerian Students President, Opakunle Oluwafunmibi, and LAUTECH Student Union Government (SUG) President, Olabiyi Anthony, among other leaders, said they deemed it fit to embark on the visit to thank the governor for securing the sole ownership of the institution, which they believe, would bring end to the lingering crisis rocking the institution over the years.
HOWEVER, students, under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday, in Ibadan, commenced peaceful demonstration, calling for an end to the lingering industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the country.
The students, who carried placards of various inscriptions, converged on the Federal Secretariat, Ikolaba, Ibadan, for the peaceful demonstration and chanted solidarity songs, demanding end to ASUU strike. They insisted that the protest would continue on daily basis until their demands are met.
