Lions-Club-InternationalLIVING up to its expectation, the Lions Club International, District 404A1 Nigeria, recently doled out 1, 000 back-packs to 1, 000 indigent students drawn from 20 schools in Delta State at the cost of N3 million.

The smile on the faces of the beneficiaries clearly showed that the young and upcoming scholars’ efforts at skipping lectures and converging on the state capital of Asaba from different parts of the state for the ceremony, was not in vain.

The students, all smartly dressed in their uniforms, twisted their bodies in ecstasy and gyrated to the rhythm of hip-hop music during the dancing competition which held shortly before the donation.
There was also free eye screening for about 200 of the 1, 000 kids from the 10 public schools that benefitted at the ceremony, which was presided over by the District Governor, Mrs. Patricia Udeme.

The district comprises of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Delta and Edo states.
Beaming with smile, the initiator, Mrs. Mary Onu said that the 1,000
Backpacks to School project meant the provision of school bags with stationery for school children who did not have such basic needs of modern school children in the pursuit of their educational career.

Mrs. Onu, the chairperson of Lion Services for Children, District
404A1 explained that with the initiative, 1,000 school kids now have the opportunity of going back to school well- prepared and with springs in their feet.

The private school proprietor explained that when she was nominated as the chairperson of Lion Services for Children, her burning desire was to come up with something, which would impact the life of every child in every community.

It didn’t take her long to determine that educating the children of the future was the proper way to bring them up.
She conceded that the club might not be able to sponsor every child to school, but was optimistic that the initiative would be able to give 1,000 children the opportunity to go to school well- prepared. The bags contain stationery like crayons, pencils, mathematical sets, pens, rulers and exercise books.
