To curb the menace of tank farms in Lagos State, especially in Apapa, the State House of Assembly has called on the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to relocate the farms in the axis to a less congested area.

The lawmakers, who spoke at the plenary session, maintained that the tank farms portrayed a threat to the lives of the people and state’s economy.

A member representing Apapa Constituency 1, Mojisola Miranda who raised the issue under matter of urgent public importance, said if adequate caution is not taken, would spread to other parts of the state.

The lawmaker urged the assembly to invite the State’s acting Commissioner for Transport and the Managing Authority of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to identify ways by which it could be curtailed.

Also speaking, representing Apapa Constituency 2, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, disclosed that residents of Apapa are having terrible experiences. In his own part, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, maintained that an urgent step has to be taken to save the state and its people.

“It is better we caution the trailer drivers to stop parking on the roads and bridges in the area. We will definitely call on the officials of LASTMA and Lagos State Safety Commission on the matter.

“We also have to call on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to provide alternative roads to motorists, while the roads in Tin Can Island were being repaired,” he said.

Representing Shomolu Constituency 1, Rotimi Olowo, said the activities of the trailer drivers are having adverse effects on the economy of the state added that efforts to curtail the menace in the past were abortive.

Also representing Epe Constituency 1, Abiodun Tobun, lamented that the Federal Government are core beneficiaries of the tank farms but unnecessarily quiet in reasoning with the people.

Tobun who suggested that government should get a location close to Tin Can Island Port, added that Lagos State should be allowed to manage the ports. Hon. Rasheed Makinde, in his contribution informed that most of the trailers are from the Eastern and Northern part of the country, which makes them to be in disobedience to the laws of the state.

In another development, the House also removed Alimi Kazeem’s nametag from the honorable members of the House. Kazeem had passed on earlier this year at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) during a brief illness.

The House dedicated the plenary session to honor the deceased. The Speaker, disclosed that all efforts to save his life were abortive.
Obasa therefore pledged support for the family.
