Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has threatened to shut Ladipo market, Mushin, over indiscriminate dumping of waste and degradation of the environment. The agency, which spoke through its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Obinna Onyenali, expressed worries over the unwholesome environmental practices being carried out by traders at Ladipo Market.

Lamenting the waste management situation at the weekend, the authority said it had in recent times doubled its efforts to ensure that business transactions across markets in Lagos were conducted in a clean and safe environment through timely deployment of trucks for waste evacuation and sweeping of the markets.

According LAWMA, these efforts are, however, being tainted by the activities of mischievous persons who would rather dump their wastes indiscriminately on the roads than patronize their assigned PSP operators.

It therefore condemned in strongest terms the unwholesome act being perpetuated by the traders in Ladipo market, saying it was exposing the environment and the people that do business there to various health dangers. The agency urged merchants at the market to turn a new leaf or face the consequences of the law.

“If these acts against the environment continue unabated, the market will be shut till further notice. LAWMA wants all markets to comply with environmental laws of the state which are essential for building a cleaner and healthier environment everyone will be proud of,” it added.

The agency, however, appealed to all residents in the state to always imbibe the habit of effective waste management by bagging their wastes for easy evacuation by their assigned PSPs.
