LASEMA quells fires in hotels on Lagos Island, Ikeja

*Recovers articulated truck, twin Containers

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) said it has just concluded an operation in the early hours of today at 205 Bamgbose Street on Lagos Island, where the Agency curtailed another fire incident in a two storey building that houses a hotel.

The fire incident, which gutted a section of the two storey building, was attributed to the effect of power surge in the split air-conditioning unit in one of the rooms, when public power supply was restored.

The inferno sparked by the power surge in the split air-conditioning unit in one of the rooms on the second floor of the hotel building reported spread to two adjoining rooms before it was curtailed and extinguished by the combined efforts of emergency responders.

Preliminary Report, according to LASEMA on Fire incident at 205 Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island stated that, “On getting to the scene of the incident, a section of a two storey building was discovered to have caught fire.

“Further investigations revealed that the building houses a hotel. The cause of the fire is determined to be a result of power surge into the split ac unit in one of the rooms on the second floor of the hotel building and it spread to the two adjoining rooms but was curtailed and extinguished by the combined efforts of emergency responders.

“No life was lost and no injuries sustained to anyone as a result of the incident. The LASEMA Response Team, LASG FIRE and FED FIRE crews were the responders at the incident scene. Recovery operation concluded”.

In a previous operation, LASEMA Response Team put out what would have qualified as one of the major fire incidents during the COVID-19 lockdown at Aromire Street in Ikeja, Lagos, if it had not been curtailed on time.

The fire outbreak in a popular hotel which cause is yet to be ascertained, was said to have started from one of the hotel rooms on the fourth floor, causing the quick evacuation of all occupants to the Muster Point by the LASEMA Response Team to ensure their safety, in line with Mr. Governor’s vision of a safer Lagos for all.

The Ikeja fire outbreak which distress call was received through the Agency’s 767/112 Toll Free Emergency Lines at 18:44hours, was attended with the usual dispatch by LASEMA and it’s primary responders from the Lagos State Government and Federal Fire Services, which enabled quick intervention that extinguished the fire speedily.

Though the fire was quickly contained to stop it from spreading to other rooms of the hotel through the roof, before it was eventually extinguished completely by Emergency Responders, Dampening Down operation continued to ensure the fire does not reignite afterwards.

Preliminary Report on the fire outbreak at Ikeja has it that, “On arrival at the incident scene it was observed that there was a fire outbreak at the aforementioned location. Occupants of the hotel where quickly evacuated to the Muster point by the team.

“Investigation gathered from some staff of the hotel revealed that the fire emanated from one of the rooms at the fourth floor of the hotel. The immediate cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

“The LRT in conjunction with LASG and Federal Fire Services quickly contained the fire from spreading to other rooms through the roof.”
Earlier yesterday, in one of it’s several operations, LASEMA Response Team recovered a truck laden with twin 20feet containers that fell sideways on the main expressway at Cele Bus Stop, inward Odo Oluwo, along Apapa – Oshodi express way Lagos.

The accident which was attributed to recklessness on the part of the driver, who was said to have been over speeding, was also accused of lacking in focus and concentration, resulted in blockade of some parts of the road and restriction of vehicular movement, as the two containers it was carrying fell on the road.

“No casualties were recorded at the incident scene where the LRT and members of the Nigerian Police Force were responders.”
