Yesterday’s Eid-El-Fitri celebrations in Lagos were low-key in several parts of Lagos, as uncertainty in the country forced sober festivities across the country.

Shops in Oshodi and many other areas in Lagos were closed, while markets did not witness the usual crowd associated with them on normal days.

The general environment all over Lagos attested to the fact that people were either holidaying or had taken time off from hustle and bustle.

The usual sound of music and musicians that entertain during similar celebrations was missing in line with the current state of the nation.

According to a celebrant: “this celebration has to be low-key for various reasons.

“For this celebration, we can see that everywhere is quiet, devoid of the usual glamour. Apart from COVID-19 that forbids gathering together, the economy is another barrier.

“Prices of things have skyrocketed and to have three square meals in a day is a problem, as some families have been forced to adjust to either twice or one meal in a day.

“There is also apprehension all over the country due to the invasion of Fulani herdsmen, kidnappers, rapists, while the Boko Haram sect is carrying out nefarious activities up North.

“People cannot even travel to their home towns for celebration. There is worry all over the place.”

He prayed for peace in Nigeria and for “a change in the situation so that there would be peace everywhere and the usual glamour that used to characterise celebrations would come back.”
