Lagos to use ICT to tackle crimes, drive smart-city

The Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed plans to drive its smart-city agenda with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), while also using it to tackle criminal activities in the state. He who revealed this in his address to participants at the ‘Evening Conversation on Moral Leadership’ held in Lagos on Sunday.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said: “Lagos does not have enough landmass despite being the most populated. We may not be able to invest more in agriculture because our share of the land mass is about 0.4 per cent and one-third of it is water; but we are focusing on using ICT to drive the smart-city initiative.

“Besides, we will be installing very soon, cameras in different parts of the state. These cameras are so sensitive such that if they hear the sound of a gun, they will turn around and capture your identity. You can be rest assured that if you are a criminal, we will come for you and get you arrested,” he said.

The founder, Eko Innovation Center, Victor Afolabi, said the moral leadership conversation has become expedient, as more youths in the country need value orientation to move their businesses and the society forward. He further expressed his organisation’s readiness to support any idea or concept that have the capacity to impact at least 10 million people.

Afolabi said they are committed to incubating, accelerating, mentoring and funding innovation and technology startups, explaining that the idea was to use innovation and technology in solving major issues in Lagos State economy and Nigeria as a whole.

Speaking on the offerings provided by the centre, Afolabi said entrepreneurs admitted can spend minimum of 18 months to three years and will be taught tax management, procurement, finance, strategy and administration.

Sanwo-Olu promised that his administration would build innovation and technology centres across the state to address the problem of youth unemployment.
