More than 300 women in Kosofe local council of Lagos State have benefitted from the free cancer screening and mammogram organised by the council chairman, Afolabi Sofola in partnership with a non-governmental organisation, Cancer Awareness Nigeria.

The event, held at Kosofe Primary Healthcare Centre, saw women of different age group in the community being screened for breast and cervical cancer, while those aged 40 and above received free mammogram.

Sofola said the programme was part of his administration’s effort to eradicate cancer among residents, adding that the health of citizens is the sole responsibility of government. He urged women to check for unusual growth in their body and report any case to the nearest health centre to prevent it from spreading and becoming untreatable.

The director, Cancer Awareness Nigeria, Tolulope Falowo, said the NGO, which focuses on early detection and prevention of breast and cervical cancer, was concerned about the rate of cases presented late, adding that to prevent further rise in the prevalence of the disease, the organisation has embarked on taking awareness to the grassroots.

He noted that while the council recorded some successes, there was need to recognize those behind the successes. He added that his administration has unveiled a free bus ride to make sure children get to their schools on time.
