It is reassuring and indeed enheartening that there is a governor who listens. That governor is Akinwumi Ambode. He may not have met all expectations, but the attitude to look at the vexed issue of bloated Land Use Charges is a good omen. It is commendable. The controversial tax document is being returned to the State Assembly for the lawmakers to have another look at it with a view to taking and incorporating the complaints of the Lagosians into their new thinking.

Meanwhile, the government announcement states that the charge on commercial property has gone down by 50 per cent; owner-occupier with third party by 25 per cent and owner-occupier by 15 per cent. The Lagos State legislators said when they staged a public hearing no one turned up. Now that the document is back in the House for review all stakeholders across the land should make necessary input this time into the processes of a new bill, so they can possess the law in the end as their own, reflecting broadly their desires and economic realities in the land.
