Mr Noh Kyu-Duck, the Ambassador of the Republic of South Korea to Nigeria said Korean pop song ‘Gangnam Style’ enjoyed than 2.3 billion followership across the globe.

Kyu-Duck said this in Abuja on Saturday at the 2015 (4th edition) of ‘’K-POP Dance Competition’’ finals with the theme ‘Exceeding K-POP‘, organised by the Korean Cultural Centre.
He said that Korean pop music (K-POP) had gone beyond the borders of the country.

“It is in fact a global cultural trend enjoyed by a huge number of people around the world on diverse digital platforms like internet, YouTube and so on.

“The hit ‘Gangnam Style’ released by ‘PSY’ in 2012 has been viewed by 2.3 billion people around the world.

“Korean singers and pop groups like ‘Dong Bang Shin’, ‘Girls’, ‘Generation’, ‘Big Bang’, ‘Wonder Girls’, ‘U-Kiss’, ‘Beast’ and ‘Kara’ are also popular in many parts of the globe,’’ Kyu-Duck said..

The envoy said that a total of 168 people in 28 teams took part in the competition, adding that it was the biggest competition since the event was launched in 2012.

He added that out of the 10 adult teams that participated in the contest, nine were from Lagos, Delta, Kaduna, Enugu and Edo.

He remarked that young Nigerians loved music and dance and believed that the K-POP was a good match for them.

“Young Nigerians are very dynamic and optimistic; they like music and dance and I believe that K-POP is a good match for them.

“Contestants at this year’s competition are expected to go beyond the level of simply imitating the performance.

“I will encourage them to demonstrate some creativity in their performance by highlighting Nigerians’ unique sense of rhythm which will enable us to have a meaningful competition,’’ he said.
Kyu-Duck said that winners of the previous editions in Nigeria participated in the finals in Korea and won prizes.

“The previous winner of the K-POP competition in Nigeria, a group called ‘The Elevators’ won the 3rd prize in the main K-POP competition held in Korea in 2012.

“The following year, ‘The Idez Girls’ won the friendship prize in the main competition in Korea as well as an honorary ambassadorship of the ‘Visit Korea Committee’.

“Such achievements are a big surprise to many Koreans who thought that Africa was still suffering from an underdeveloped cultural infrastructure,” he said.

Kyu-Duck announced that the 2015 winners would participate in the overall finals which would take place in October at Changwon, Republic of Korea.
