Kebbi purchases 250 buses for transport, partners USAID/Shop plus to fight Diarrhea

The Kebbi State Government has awarded a contract worth N300million for the purchase of 250 buses for the state transport authority.Briefing newsmen yesterday in his office, Chairman of the state chapter of the National Roads Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Usman Abubakar Bagudu, said the gesture was to support the union on transportation and assist the less privileged commuters who cannot afford commercial buses.

He said the buses, to be distributed across the 21 councils, would cover all states of the federation.”The 18-seater buses would be on different categories and would be given to each driver at subsidised rate, while the price would be affordable to the people,” he added.

He commended the efforts of Governor Atiku Bagudu in assisting the union and assured him their full support and cooperation with his administration.Meanwhile, the government, in collaboration with Sustaining Health Outcomes in the Private Sector Plus (SHOP Plus) has flag-off a campaign on eradicate diarrhea in the state.

The flag-off, which took place at the Presidential Hall, Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, with the aimed to fight the menace.SHOP Plus aims to increase the use of priority health service through the strategic expansion of private sector approaches, taking into account the entire health system.

It has continually consolidated project interventions in the state, building capacity of community-based and religious organisations to increase knowledge and create awareness on the use of Zinc/ORS to treat diarrhea in children below five years at the household level.

Speaking at the event, the head of SHOP Plus team and the chief party, Mrs. Ayodele Iroko, said the agency has trained 17 private hospitals medical personnel on Push Diarrhea Away in the state, adding that about seven councils and villages have been visited to create awareness.

Mrs. Iroko stated that the mission of the organisation is to saved the lives of the children and ensured that diarrhea is eradicated from the state through extensive campaign.

She advised parents, especially mothers, to keep their children away from filthy environments and ensure personal hygiene.During the advocacy visit to the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Ismail Mera, the monarch commended the agency’s intervention, saying its support and campaign would hasten the eradication of the menace in communities and ensure the protection of lives of the children.

In her response, wife of the governor, Dr. Zainab Atiku Bagudu, thanked the organisation for choosing Kebbi as its focal centre of its activities.She assured them of the state’s readiness and cooperation to ensure a hitch-free exercise.
