One of the oldest unity schools in Nigeria, King’s College, Lagos, will be celebrating its founder’s day this month.

One of the oldest unity schools in Nigeria, King’s College, Lagos, will be celebrating its founder’s day this month. Founded in 1909, the alumni association has lined up a series of activities to celebrate the event, which begins on September 20.

The founder’s day lecture will hold on September 20, by 5pm, while there is a Jumat prayer scheduled for September 22 at the Syrian Mosque, Ribadu Road, Ikoyi.

The yearly general meeting, where new executive members will be elected, holds on September 23. The founders day dinner will come up later in the evening, while a thanksgiving service is scheduled for the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, the following day.

The Vice President of the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA), Rotimi Aladesanmi, said: “The institution has produced so many eminent Nigerians; besides, we carry out these activities as a means of fraternizing, because King’s men, as we fondly refer to ourselves, are scattered all over the world, and so, we come together because there is strength in unity.

Besides, the institution was and is still a merit-driven school based on excellence and we are preaching that to the world, as we believe that there is no better time to do so.”

Aladesanmi, while emphasizing on the importance of education and academic excellence, added, “education is the bedrock of any society, the individuals that rule the world today are about ideas, the richest man in the world today the owner of amazon.com does not have oil wells.

“Japan, as one of the richest countries in the world, does not have resources, they don’t even have land, but they have the brains and ideas, they invested in education, more than ever before, the world, is going into education.

“There is one of our King’s men, who is not up to 40 years yet, that Apple bought his company for $1billion. The world is moving away from natural resources education is what is ruling the world and that is our focus.”

Aladekanmi said, “in order to instil values to the young ones, who may not understand the importance, we make out time to give career and motivational talks to them. For instance, the current ICAN President, Ismail Zakari, is also a Kingsman, the association has a programme about career guidance called ‘Catch them Young’, it is about inspiring the young generation to make a career of the accounting profession and they go to secondary schools to give these talks, and we do so from time to time.”
