The Special Counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor has called for immediate constitution of a judicial inquiry to investigate immediate and remote causes of alleged police invasion of IPOB’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor’s residence in Oraifite, Anambra State.

Ejimakor said the incident that reportedly resulted in and caused human injuries and deaths, as well as destruction of property, among others, was “not at the outset related to IPOB, but was instead traceable to a long-running communal strife in Oraifite, which happens to be Ejiofor’s hometown.”

Ejimakor said: “Given the polarised atmosphere, the solution does not lie in police declaring Ejiofor wanted. The solution lies in an independent inquiry that will unravel the root causes of the matter. The credibility of such inquiry will stand in contrast to any investigation the police can do as an interested party. You cannot be a judge and the executioner in your own case.”

While making references to releases from Ejiofor, the Nigeria police and the Oraifite community to buttress his position, Ejimakor said the matter was not IPOB-instigated, as has been canvassed in some quarters.

He urged Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano to “rise to the occasion and exercise his authority under the law as such is the only fair way to separate the apples from the oranges, and conclusively determine who bears the ultimate criminal or civil liability, so that in the end, it will also be assured that such unsavory incident does not repeat itself.”
