Kano accountant general resigns, Ganduje orders probe of tenure
The Accountant General of Kano State, Hajia Aisha Mohammed Bello, yesterday resigned her appointment. In her resignation letter dated 20th of February, 2018 and addressed to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the former AG said: “It is with a huge sense of responsibility that I hereby tender my letter of resignation from the services of Kano State government with effect from 22nd February, 2018.
“ Meanwhile, I wish to profoundly thank the executive governor of Kano State for the wonderful opportunity given to me to serve this government in two different capacities as commissioner for planning and budget from 22 June 2015 and later as accountant general from 17th August 2016 to date”.
Although Bello did not state reasons she decided to quit her lucrative appointment, sources close to the former AG hinted that the resignation might not be unconnected with persistent cases of interference by strong personality in the government.
“This was the second and final time she attempted to leave the office. The first time the governor personally rejected it. She was persuaded, thinking the threat and meddling in her official responsibility would stop, unfortunately it got worse.
“There was a time she was intimidated by the state anti-corruption commission for alleged mismanagement. She came out of it without any skirmish, yet nobody was in turn punished and no apology issued,” The Guardian was told.
Meanwhile, Governor Ganduje has directed thorough investigation into financial management and government transactions while the former AG was in office. In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mallam Mohammad Garba, the governor ordered the state anti-corruption commission to investigate contracts payment, salary payments and alleged salary deductions, among others.Ganduje, however, applauded Bello for her service to the state, and accepted her resignation.. The governor has appointed the Director of Treasury in the Ministry of Finance, Malam Shehu Abbas Mu’azu, as the acting accountant general.
