Contractors in Kaduna State, under the auspices of Group of Kaduna Drainage Contractors, have protested against non-payment of N1.2 billion debts.

The contractors gave a-five-day ultimatum for the government to invite them for a round table meeting.

They vowed to embark on a sit-down protest at the entrance to the Government House, should it fail to pay them at the expiration of the ultimatum.

While addressing journalists shortly after an emergency meeting of the group at Hamdala Hotel Garden, Kaduna, the Public Relations Officer of Kaduna Road Agency (KADRA) contractors, Nasir Abubakar, said the contractors will not only occupy the gate leading to the government house, but will also mobilise their children, wives and family members to join in the sit-down protest.

According to him, the contract works were scattered across seven local government areas of the state: Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Igabi, Chikun, Zaria, Sabo Gari, and Jama’a local government areas.

The 489 contractors alleged that some selected close allies of the governor were paid the sum of N600 million in December 2017.

“At the initial time, the allocated amount for the said contracts was 3.5 billion naira and thereafter, it was screened to 1.8 billion naira with the inauguration of a committee headed by the Secretary to Kaduna State Government (SSG), Abass Balarebe.”

At the time of this report, all efforts to get across to the Managing Director of KADRA proved abortive.
