Investigating past leaders baseless, cleric tells Oluwarotimi Akeredolu

The Archbishop of Ondo Province of the Anglican Diocese, George Latunji Lasebikan, yesterday urged Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to discharge his duties conscientiously and avoid probing his predecessors. The cleric gave the charge in his sermon during a thanksgiving service for the new helmsman at his hometown, Owo.

Dispelling suggestions that his predecessor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, should be jailed for a variety of alleged malfeasances, he urged him to jettison such calls.

The cleric described probing the eight-year administration of Mimiko as “nonsense. What is the meaning of that? Probe of governments in the past, what do you make out of it? As you have gotten to the office, do your own job.”

He added: “President Muhammadu Buhari was to ensure that all those who mismanaged our money are brought to book, what have we got so far? The precious time he would have used to do better thing has been wasted pursuing people who are unwilling to bend. The whole nation is suffering because of probe. Probe has no meaning for anybody.”

Lasebikan advised the governor to be very cautious, saying: “There will always be sycophants who will praise him not because he is doing well. But the day that you do not benefit sycophants, they will turn around to become your biggest critics. When people begin to give you adulation as a leader, watch out.”
