Interior ex-minister, Moro, alleges attempt on his life

Benue South senatorial rerun
• Idoma groups urge Mark to step down
• Oyegun confident of APC’s victory
AS political parties continue campaign, for the Benue South Senatorial re-run election, a top supporter of the former Senate President, who is ex-minister of Interior, Abba Moro, has raised the alarm over the assassination attempt on his life and other supporters of David Mark by four unidentified gunmen.
At a press conference in Otukpo, yesterday, Moro said the attempt to assassinate him and a businesswoman, who is the wife of an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) electoral officer, was foiled last Saturday by the Nigeria Police at Ugbokolo, Benue State.
The former minister however, vowed that he will not be deterred by intimidation from any person or groups of persons to mobilise support for the re-election of David Mark.
He said the assassins came to his house at Ugbokolo in a white Toyota Camry car at about 11p.m, and demanded to know whether he was in, adding that they were however later arrested by policemen with guns and other dangerous weapons.
Also, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over alleged plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unleash fake soldiers and police on the area to manipulate the election.
The state Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, alerted yesterday that APC had started recruiting armed thugs who would disguise as soldiers or policemen to cover the election.
Agbo stated that vigilante groups are being asked to forward their measurements for the proposed army and police uniforms and size of shoes, which they would adorn on election day to do the APC’s bidding.
However, 10 groups, under the aegis of the United Idoma Citizens (UIC) yesterday called for Mark, who has been a senator since the return of democratic rule in 1999, to step down.
This comes barely one month after 10 other groups, under the aegis of the Conference of Idoma Pressure Groups, asked the senator to step down.
The UIC, in a statement by its coordinator, Sunday Ogbe, said it was time for Mark to step aside, having served as the political leader of the Idoma for 16 years.
The group listed several abandoned projects by Mark, including the construction of Oweto Road, a dam in Otukpo and the University of Medical Sciences.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, has expressed confidence that the party will win the Benue South senatorial re-run election holding on February 13th.
Oyegun, who made the declaration in Otukpo, Benue State during the ceremony flagging-off the campaign for the party’s candidate, Daniel Onjeh, and receiving of new members who just joined the APC, said there is no doubt that the party is ready to win.
Among some of defectors from the PDP to APC at the rally are, former deputy governor to Gabriel Suswam, Chief Steven Lawani, former Niger Delta Minister, Dr. Samuel Ode, former Minister of Education, Professor Jerry Agada, Chief Mike Okibe Onoja, Chief John Enyi among others.

Abba Moron: if they had succeeded in assassinating you, it would have been retribution for the many lives you caused to expire prematurely in their youths! Very few would have mourned your demise!
We will review and take appropriate action.
