INEC’s, security agencies’ neutrality not guaranteed, says Wike
The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has raised the alarm that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies may not be neutral in the governorship election.
Wike spoke when members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council visited him at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
He condemned Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s allegation that he and Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State had mobilised militants to disrupt the polls.
He explained: “What I told Edo people that has set Oshiomhole in panic mode was that the voters would not trust the neutrality of these important institutions. I still stand by my words that Edo people must be vigilant so that their votes would count.”
The governor said it was worrisome that Oshiomhole had alleged that they donated N2billion to facilitate the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate, Pastor Osagie-Ize-Iyamu.
He said Oshiomhole has a penchant for lies and inconsistencies, arising from his fear that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be defeated at the election.
Wike explained that he visited Edo to campaign for the PDP, the same way that Oshiomhole had stormed Rivers State in 2015 to campaign for the then APC’s governorship candidate.
He added that he was surprised that Oshiomhole could make such an allegation, when in fact, they both embraced at the Benin airport on the day that he visited the state.
Wike said: “If Oshiomhole has lost the confidence of his people, he should not blame me. He brought President Muhammadu Buhari and 10 APC governors to campaign in the state for his party. Yet, he is afraid at the visit of only two PDP governors to the state.
“This was the same man who praised former President Goodluck Jonathan for promoting free and fair election. He preached a one- man, one-vote message, which saw him winning a second term in office.
“Today, in his notorious inconsistency, anywhere he goes, he insults Jonathan. When Buhari leaves office, Oshiomhole would do the same to him.”
