The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the names of 229 aliens from the national voter register.

Its Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who disclosed this yesterday at the quarterly consultative meeting with security agencies at the Commission ‘s headquarters in Abuja, said the action was taken on the basis of information received from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

He said: “Registering to vote and actual voting in an election are the exclusive rights of Nigerian citizens, to which aliens are excluded by law. We have agreed with the NIS that they will deploy their personnel to registration centres nationwide to ensure that only Nigerians register to vote in our election.

“We shall continue to work in partnership to ensure that our voter register is purged of ineligible registrants as enshrined in the Electoral Act.
