INEC explains reasons for post 2019 polls self-appraisal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed readiness and need for it embarking on self-appraisal of the 2019 general elections, noting that it would guide it in conducting future polls.

At the end of a retreat on “Review of the 2019 General Elections”, National Commissioner in charge of Abia, Ebonyi and Imo State, Okey Ibeanu, said the aim was critical to the commission in order to look into all the areas they worked on, whilst assessing successes and failures.

The commission, he said, was not unmindful of the criticisms that trailed it, noting that the gathering afforded the participants to know what to do in subsequent elections.

According to Ibeanu, in the event attended by the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Francis Ezeonu, Deputy Director, Gender and Gender Related Issues, Voter Education and Publicity Directorate, INEC, headquarters, Abuja, Blessing Obidiegwu, among others, there were 84 million voters, in 150,000 locations, of 1,500 contested positions organized by 1.2 million officials. He said they dwelt on examination of conditions of materials used, including sensitive and non-sensitive materials amongst others.
