Immigration plans degree-awarding institution to tackle migration across West Africa
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), yesterday unfolded plans to establish a degree-awarding institution to take care of migration issues across the country’s numerous borders.
The Comptroller-General of NIS, Muhammad Babandede unveiled the plan when he led top management of the service on a visit to the National Universities Commission, (NUC) in Abuja, said the proposed institution with the name West African Institute of Migration Studies, would train the officers and men of Immigration of the dynamics of the migration.
The proposed institute is to be located in Tugaar in Kebbi State, would be affiliated to a university in Nigeria and will award degree. He said the NIS would want to develop a policy for managing migration in the West African sub-region, for which Nigeria would be the driver.
The development is coming barely two weeks after the Nigerian Army announced the planned establishment of a full-fledged military University in Biu, Borno State as part of its strategy to train military personnel in the act of tackling insurgency, especially in the north eastern part of the country.
The Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed who endorsed the idea, described the planned institution as strategic, giving the fact that Nigeria is bordered largely by French-speaking neighours in West Africa, believing that it would enhance further integration. According to Babandede, the proposed institution would be multilingual in nature.
