Ikpeazu elevates Aba committee to parastatal
The ad hoc Aba Urban Renewal Committee constituted to instill sanity in infrastructure and environment management in Aba and enforce the relevant town planning laws, among others, has been elevated to a full-fledged government parastatal.
Renamed Aba Urban Renewal Authority, the Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who announced this development disclosed that it has become necessary to elevate the committee to enable the new outfit exercise its functions with the backing of law as a government agency.
He explained that the reinforced agency is to oversee the general rehabilitation work in Aba, including waste management and revenue generation and also be instrumental to the fulfillment of the government policy, in relation to the transformation and restoration drive of the city.
The governor also specifically commended the chairman and members of the committee for enforcing the new programme of reformation and upgrading of markets to their original master plan, which ensures that illegal shops and other structures that distort the original plan are removed.
According to the state Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Godwin Adindu, the vision is to develop Aba as hub of small and medium scale enterprise, stressing that the elevated agency will act as vehicle towards the actualisation of the dream.
He urged residents of Aba and local investors to partner government in restoring the lost glory of the ancient city of commerce and trade.
