I didn’t use my constituents’ palliatives for my birthday, says Alli-Macaulay

Member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Sherifat Kehinde Mojisolaoluwa Alli-Macaulay who was accused of using palliatives meant to cushion the sufferings caused by COVID-19 to celebrate her birthday last year, has dispelled the rumors describing them as wicked and meant to tarnish her image.

Speaking with The Guardian, she firmly denied using the palliative items meant for her constituents for her birthday celebration last year saying the ceremony was a dual celebration, her birthday and women empowerment programme. She said it was a coincidence that the 90 boxes of noodles came at the same time and had to be shared to the rightful owners.

“I’m a woman of compassion. I can never take what’s meant for the people and even before I became a member in 2019, I have always touched people’s lives.”

She also used the opportunity to greet all Muslims, wishing them Ramadan Mubarak, adding that she will be giving out food items in the next few days. Alli–Macaulay who represents Amuwo Odofin Constituency I and doubles as Chairman, House Committee on women affairs, poverty alleviation and job creation, made this known during an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos, saying the gesture was because Ramadan is a time for everyone to show love to their neighbors. She admonished all to develop a heart of giving and help the people around them, especially those in need. Alli-Macaulay said Ramadan is for Muslims to put themselves in the position of those that are hungry so they can know how it feels to be in need.

“On my part, my office has reached out to over 3000 people through our empowerment programs and this holy month of Ramadan is not any different as we will be reaching out to over 1000 women.” She noted that the gesture was not from the assembly but her pocket. She also prayed for the peace and unity of Lagos and the country generally. She noted that last year; she gave out pepper grinding machines, sewing machines, hairdryer sets, popcorn machines to empower women, adding that it’s important to give women chance when considering people for positions of authority at all levels of government. She said more women should seize the opportunity of the forthcoming local government elections to make their mark, adding that discrimination against women must be eliminated.
