HURIWA seeks probe of ‘paedophiles’ in National Assembly

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the move by some federal lawmakers to amend the Electoral Act to allow for underage girls, who are married, to vote.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday by the National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, and National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, the group disclosed its intention to write the European Union (EU), United Kingdom (UK) among others to probe some of the legislators for possible links to paedophilia.

HURIWA stated: “We are going to send powerful letters to member nations of the EU, as well as the UK, United States of America (U.S.A.), Australia, and Canada to call their attention to the possibility of a network of paedophiles in the National Assembly.

“We will be asking these developed societies to take steps to impose travel restrictions on these identified members of the National Assembly who may be running a network and gang of paedophiles.”

The human rights association expressed disappointment that at a time nation’s around the world were using their instruments of legislation to advance women’s rights and stop gender-based violence (GBV), Nigeria’s National Assembly was busy drafting a pro-paedophilia bill to enable underage married girls to enjoy voting rights, which amounts to legalising paedophilia.

It is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who said the issue of voting age is a constitutional matter, the group noted, adding that “the law recognises 18 as marriageable age.”
