HURIWA, Ohanaeze, MASSOB condemn violence, urge prosecution of perpetrators

A pro-democracy and non-governmental organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has strongly condemned the invasion by hoodlums of the Senate and the theft of the mace.
The rights group, which described the attack as a dangerous precedent and a deadly attack on a key institution of constitutional democracy, accused the executive arm of government that controls the security forces of collusion and conspiracy in the disgraceful episode at the Senate.
Also, an apex socio-cultural group in the South-East, Ohanaeze, has condemned the action of some thugs who invaded the Senate and went away with the mace.
A member of the group, Chief Guy Ikokwu, said it shows that Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, representing APC, Delta Central, who came in company of the thugs, is misrepresenting his constituency.
Ikokwu, who spoke with The Guardian, noted that with such action, it is an indication for a military coup and take-over of the National Assembly.
He said: “This is not the first time something like this is happening. Jubril was also suspended, it is now the matter of the behaviour of the individual to know whether he is a democrat or he is a hired thug and if he is a thug, he is misrepresenting his constituency, his people and the state he comes from.”
HURIWA, in a statement jointly signed by its National Co-ordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and National Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf, also called for the arrest of the sponsors of the invasion and the attackers and their prosecution for treason.
“The criminal act of violence and depravity visited on the National Assembly by armed goons suspected to have been brought by a suspended Senator Omo-Agege must not be allowed to go unpunished. The criminal and shameful act is truly an attempt to overthrow the legitimately constituted authority of the legislative arm of government.
“There is no doubt that the invasion of the Senate by the unruly mob is not just a slap on the integrity of the legislature but has brought global opprobrium on Nigeria coupled with the general state of insecurity and co-ordinated killings of innocent citizens by armed Fulani herdsmen,” the statement said.
In the same vein, the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has said that the invasion and forceful removal of the Senate mace by thugs clearly indicates that Nigeria is a failed and irreparable state.
The group in a statement in Enugu by its leader, Uchenna Madu, said the development also indicates that Nigeria would never stand together alone.
