A non-governmental organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has condemned the high presence of troops and use of force in the ongoing Python Dance II in Abia State.

The rights group said there was no legal reason for the deployment given that there were no extenuating circumstances such as threats to national security as prescribed in relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

It argued that the agitators besides being non-violent, were only canvassing for self-determination recognised by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and several other global laws.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA said the exercise made no sense at a time that the President inaugurated a panel to look into allegations of gross rights violation against the military.

It accused the military of carrying out the operation as if the nation was under a martial law in contravention of Section 33(1) of the constitution.
HURIWA, therefore, wonders why the armed security forces went after Kanu and his supporters with so much force, fury and overwhelming firepower.
