The Senator representing Abia Central, Chief Theodore Orji, has stated that contrary to beliefs in some quarters, the duty of a lawmaker at both federal and state levels did not include nomination or determination of contractors to handle approved projects or award contracts.

He said it is, however, the duty of a lawmaker to table the needs of his constituency before the government and ensure that such needs are accommodated in the budgets for execution.

It would then be a follow-up duty of the lawmaker to see that the approved projects are executed. The senator, who spoke at Nsirimo in Umuahia South Local Council at the formal commissioning of the motorised water borehole, which the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audi Ogbe said the senator attracted to the community, urged the community and other communities in whose domains projects are built, to protect them from vandalism and use them effectively and responsibly.

The Minister, represented by the Abia State Director in Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Ebere Oziri, commended Orji for all the projects he has facilitated for his constituency, stressing that with the commissioned water borehole, the community’s long perennial potable water problem has been addressed even as it would ginger them more effectively towards farming.

Senator Orji while expressing elation over the actualisation of the water project in Nsirimo which community he said was very dear to him, recalled how deeply concerned he was by the lack of potable water in the community, hence he vowed to change the scenario “ I must enjoin you therefore to guard this project from vandalism especially the water pump and generator.”

Senator Orji recalled that he had attracted federal projects in the six local councils of his Abia Central Constituency even as he pledged to sustain it. He said a number of communities in the senatorial zone had received electricity transformers and access roads, describing the gestures as distribution of dividends of democracy to the people.

National President of Nsirimo community, Chief Raymond Nwosu, commended Orji for attracting the project to the community, describing him as a passionate leader.
