Barely 24 hours after suspected assassins shot dead a journalist in Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State, unidentified hoodlums have killed a policeman at a drinking bar in the red light district of Hospital Road, Yenagoa.

The Guardian gathered that the hoodlums made away his AK47 riffle after hacking their victim to death at the relaxation spot. The incident, which happened on Sunday, created panic in the area and forced many pubs to temporarily shut down their business.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said the policeman went to the pub with his riffle to drink. He said unknown to the deceased, some bandits, who were interested in his rifle joined him at the bar pretending to be customers.

“After taking some bottles, the policeman stood up to urinate. He was holding his riffle. But the criminals trailed him to the backyard where they attacked and killed him, before fleeing the scene with his gun,” he said.

It was gathered that the police later stormed and raided shanties occupied by prostitutes in the area in search of the hoodlums.

When contacted, spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, ‎confirmed the incident. He stated: “On April 16, a police patrol team parked opposite the Skippers fast-food, along DSP Alamieyeseigha Road, for surveillance operations.

“A police sergeant strayed away from the team and was attacked by hoodlums who took away his firearm. We are following a promising lead and investigation is ongoing,” he said.

In another development, three suspected armed robbers were yesterday stoned and burnt to death by angry mob in Adikpo, Kwande local council of Benue State.

According to the Sole Administrator of the council, Mr. Teryila Iorhemen, the incident took place at a filling station located at the popular ‘Y’ junction, Adikpo town, which is about 150 meters to the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat.

He said the robbers had stormed the filling station, asked everyone to lie face down and shot into the air, but a second shot did not fire indicating that their bullets had finished. It was at this point that the irate mob apprehended and burnt them beyond recognition before the police could arrive at the scene.

It would be recalled that in recent times, there have been upsurge in the incidences of filling station robberies in the area, which has compelled many operators to close as early as 8:00p.m. for fear of the unknown.
