Gumi tags 2019 general elections worst in nation’s history

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, has described the 2019 general elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the most fraudulent in the nation’s history.

Dr. Gumi said the surest way to move the country forward and chart development for the nation is to have credible election.

When the leadership of Evangelical Bible Outreach Ministries International (EBOMI) visited him in Kaduna yesterday, the Islamic scholar berated President Muhammadu Buhari’s government for conducting flawed general elections early this year.

Gumi, who was optimistic of a better Nigeria in the future, said: “Nigeria’s present leaders are not educated enough to solve the country’s problems,” noting that the citizens were already feeling the pains of incompetent leadership.

He, however, called on southern politicians, whom he said had betrayed Nigerians by supporting incompetent leaders, to desist from deceitful politics for the betterment of the country.

“None of those southern political leaders who betrayed the Nigerian masses will get our support in the coming elections,” he emphasised.

Gumi further argued that the wrong selection of leaders in the country had subjected the citizens to abject poverty and untold hardship, especially in the North.

Said he: “As a people, we must desist from deceitful politics, because I so much believe that religion should not be a yardstick to build Nigeria.”

During a courtesy visit by EBOMI to the secretariat of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), chairman of Kaduna CAN, Rev. Joseph Hayab, insisted on religious tolerance.

Hayab said, “In my family, we have Christians and Muslims; so, I can never be a religious bigot.

“In this city, I have seen the good, bad and ugly, especially during the Miss World crisis. In the last nine years, I have been advocating peaceful coexistence and oneness of our people.”

“Those who claimed to love Kaduna more than some of us, where were they during these years that crises nearly consumed the people.”
