Group tackles Unical VC, management over alleged excesses

University of Calabar

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), under the aegis of League of Civil Society Organisations, have called on the Federal Ministry of Education to urgently call the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (Unical), Prof Zana Akpagu, and the institution’s management to order over their alleged excesses in running the affairs of the institution.

The group, at a press conference in Abuja yesterday by its director, Kamaldeen Adefila, also condemned what it called an illegal termination of appointment of the school Bursar, Peter Agi, who they said was victimised for insisting on “due process” in managing the university’s finances.

According to them, their investigations revealed that the financial integrity of the institution have been compromised by the VC, who usurped the professional and legal powers of the sacked Bursar by insisting on retaining a consultant for the collection of the university’s levies.

They noted that the vice chancellor contravened a subsisting order of the National Industrial Court (NIC) in Uyo, restraining the university from interviewing or employing any person or persons as Bursar, pending the determination of motion on notice filed and served on the university.

The group, therefore, called on Akpagu to tell Nigerians how Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) monies were spent and why he unilaterally employed staff without consideration of the state of the university’s finances.
