AS part of activities marking the 16 days of activism-a campaign to galvanise action to end violence against women and girls around the world, Voices for change (V4C), a Department for International development (DFID) funded programme, which seeks to empower women and adolescent girls by promoting enabling environment for them to maximize their potential, held a road procession to campaign against gender-based violence across.

The campaign was also used to remind Lagosians of the need to stop gender-based violence. The group was joined by its implementing partners, Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), HEARTLAND alliance and Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and their stakeholders.

According to Nigeria’s 2013 Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), gender-based violence cuts across all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and nearly three in 10 Nigerian women have experienced physical violence since age 15.

Considering the figures in the report, there is a need to raise awareness and for victims to report incidences of violence to appropriate authorities. The road show, which commenced from the National Stadium, Surulere saw the participants process en route Fadeyi, sensitising the communities on the need to shun all forms of gender-based violence and embrace gender equality.

According to the State Coordinator of the group, Ruth Okonya, men and women deserve equal opportunities and women who experience violence must make efforts to speak out and report such incidences to appropriate authorities, as no one has the right to violate another.
