A group, the Committee of the Indigenous Associations of Lagos State (CIALS), has supported the implementation of the Lagos traffic law banning Okada and Keke Napep operation in the state.

A group, the Committee of the Indigenous Associations of Lagos State (CIALS), has supported the implementation of the Lagos traffic law banning Okada and Keke Napep operation in the state.

In a statement signed by the Co-ordinator of CIALS, Prof. Rasheed Kola Ojikutu, the group said that it was in support of the ban because the re-enforcement of the law was due to concern on the high rate of accidents and deaths caused by the operation of this mode of transportation in the state.

The group, which said that although many people have commended the step while some urged the government to reconsider its stand, said: “We hope that the law, which was properly passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly, is not thrown away. An effective administration must always strive to make the best choice for its people.”

We are an indigenous association, though non-partisan, but highly committed to the advancement of the state. A situation where over 10,000 accidents due to motorcycle and tricycle operation were recorded at the general hospitals alone cannot and should not be condoned by any serious government.”Also, speaking with The Guardian, a member of the association, Mr. Moshood Olayiwola Raheeem, said: “Most of the riders are not Lagosians or Nigerians. They don’t stay in Lagos or pay tax and when they cause havoc, the government is expected to clean it up.”
