Governor Okorocha tasks 55 beauty queens on poverty, illiteracy in Africa

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has charged 55 beauty queens in Africa to use their positions to fight illiteracy and poverty in the continent.

Okorocha, who made the appeal in Owerri when he received the queens at the commencement of their two-week tour and election of their overall leader in the state at the weekend, said that unity as an instrument could achieve the aim.

The election will take place in November 29, 2018.The governor said: “It has always been my desire to see Africans under one roof to dramatise African unity, so that Africans, wherever they may be found, would remain a united people. Today, that dream has come true, having all parts of Africa to come to Imo State.”

Okorocha expressed joy that his visitors were in Imo to promote their cultures, decency and ideal attributes of African women.He said that Imo under his watch was relatively peaceful, urging them to feel at home.

The governor used the opportunity to announce automatic Imo citizenship for the winner at the election. In another development, the Atiku Poverty Cure Initiative Coalition has lamented crippling poverty, serial peddling of falsehood and loss of lives now being experienced in the country.

It also frowned at recent rating of Nigeria by World Bank as one of the poorest nations, saying that unless the trend is halted, Nigeria would cease to exist.

In a statement by its national coordinator and general secretary, Jones Ogwumike and Abdul-Rasheed Atta, the group criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for excessive borrowing and wondered why it had not yet owned up to its weakness and inability to function as a government, or bring about the much-needed dividends of democracy for citizens.It, therefore, urged the party to work assiduously for unity and progress of the country as well as stop using state funds for frivolous purposes.
