The Federal Government has voted N1.2 billion to acquire Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 5) for essential data upgrade on national planning, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

Statistician General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, who made this known yesterday in Abuja, said that the MICS 5 cluster survey is to provide a broad base data on Nigerian women and children, as well as other socio-economic indices to boost the economy.

Director of Real Sector, NBS, Isiaka Olanrewaju, who represented the statistician-general at the event, explained that the survey has been designed not only to focus on women and children but on other key sectors that contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) across board.

He explained that 960 households are to be used as samples in each state, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), even as he hinted that the exercise, which commences immediately, would last for three months.

According to Kale, Lagos and Kano states are to serve as pilots for implementing the cluster survey at the senatorial zones, as opposed to when it was limited to state levels, adding that the survey would be done with the aid of computer-aided questionnaires to be administered by fully trained personnel.

Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Mr. Dennis Jobby said that the international organisation has been partnering the Federal Government since 1995 on different types of survey in the country.

Jobby revealed that UNICEF, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Federal Ministry of Health, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) are funding the project.
