Gombe State Government has declared curfew in the state capital following yesterday’s clash between Christian youth and some thugs in the metropolis.

In a statement by the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Mr. James Pisagih, Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo said the curfew between 3pm Saturday and 6am this morning is with immediate effect to douse tension.

The statement said the situation would be review today after the restoration of normalcy, while only security agencies and essential services workers are allowed to move during the curfew. During the mass burial held by the state government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the eight teenagers killed by a security agent last Sunday, the mourners closed roads leading to the Gombe Specialists Hospital where the victims’ remains were kept and CAN centre, the church service venue. This, it was said did not go down well with some residents, as the road closure led to heavy traffic, which made some residents to open the roads to traffic.

The action was perceived by the Christian youths as threat to the burial ceremony, which made the members of the Boys Brigade to block the roads leading to the state from Kano and Yobe States. This led to tension with security agencies mobilised to the scene to prevent breakdown of law and order.
