If he had known that separating an alleged fight that ensued between his co-butchers, Michael Kingsley and one Ogidi at their Artisan quarters residence, on Ogui Road, Enugu State, would have ended his life, he probably would have restrained himself from the scene.

But oblivious that death awaited him from the incident, Ifeanyi Egwuagu had on Monday evening attempted to separate his colleagues from fighting after they returned home from their drinking joint.

Although Ifeanyi was not part of the drinking spree, he however, came out to separate his friends from fighting, but several pieces of broken bottles engaged by the combatants in the fight were used to pummel his body and he died before medical attention could come his way. The combatants immediately escaped.

Ifeanyi was a goat butcher and lived with his colleagues at the Artisan area. The Guardian gathered that Michael, a fowl butcher had that evening gone out to drink with his colleague, Ogidi. Returning home later that night, Ogidi allegedly compelled him to buy more drinks but Micheal refused, leading to a fight.

The source stated that Ifeanyi, who had gone to bed, was woken up by the noise of the commotion and he dashed to the scene to separate his co-butchers and roommates.

According to the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, Ifeanyi was allegedly “stabbed twice with a broken bottle by the rib side and at the lower abdomen by Micheal, who thereafter fled to avoid being nabbed as he noticed that the victim was gasping for breath.

“Following the information, the police headed to the scene where they met the victim lying down in a pool of blood and was immediately rushed to the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu for medical attention where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.”

He stated that a manhunt was immediately launched and Michael who hails from Ubahu in Nkanu East local government area of the state was promptly arrested. “Michael has confessed to the crime and claimed however that the act was not intentional.”
