GMOs are not harmful, says NBMA Boss
Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency, Rufus Ebegba, says the controversy over the safety of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is unnecessary, insisting that such products are safe for humans.
He explains that GMO technology is helping countries around the world to boost agricultural inputs and grow economies, calling for more collaboration between the agency and media to allay public anxiety about the safety of GMOs.
The DG made the call when a group of editors and bureau chiefs of media houses visited the agency in Abuja on Thursday to interact with him on the status of biosafety in Nigeria and to felicitate with the agency as it marked its four years of establishment.
Ebegba says journalists have great roles to play to ensure the development of the nation, urging the media to partner with them to ensure that government policies are realised for the benefit of Nigerians.
The editors unanimously gave their support. They called for more stakeholder engagement to enlighten and educate the public on the activities and mandate of the agency.
